Local Development Plan - the process

Historic Environment

The county borough has a rich and varied historic environment, which undoubtedly has a role to play in terms of the aims and objectives of the plan.

The policies that seek to implement these aims and objectives deal largely with the historic environment in relation to its impact upon other areas, rather than as a topic in its own right, as national planning guidance now directs local planning authorities not to formulate policy for specific historic environment designations, where these are covered by separate legislation. Since this is the case with almost all categories of historic environment designation, no policies to cater for their enhancement or protection have been included within the deposit version of the LDP (in contrast to the UDP). This is elaborated upon within the Historic Environment Background Paper.
